P. T. Usha

Queen of Indian Tracks and Field

Padma Shri Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha, better known as Payyoli Express and internationally renowned as the Queen of Indian Tracks and Field, is a multi-gold medallist in Asian Games. Usha created history in the 10th Asian Games held in Seoul in 1986, owning four gold medals and one silver. Earlier in the Asian Games held in 1982, she won two silver medals making the hosting country proud.

Usha was born in the village of Payyoli, Kozhikode District, Kerala. In 1976 the Kerala State Government started a Sports School for women, and Usha was chosen to represent her district.

In 1979 she participated in the National School Games, where she was noticed by OM Nambiar, who coached her throughout her career.This Malayali Golden Girl has an extensive array of gold medals to her credit from various international meets, to name a few—World Junior Meet at Seoul, Asian Tracks and Field meet held at Singapore and Kuwait, International meet at Inglewood, USA, International Invitation Meets held at Karachi, New Delhi, Ludhiana and Pune. She is also an Olympics participant.


Usha was honoured by the Government of India by conferring on her the prestigious Padma Shri recognising her contribution in the sphere of sports and Arjuna Award recognising her outstanding achievements in national sports. She was also awarded the Kerala Sports Journalists’ Award. Now Usha runs a sports school where she grooms the future sports stars of India.
